The open valleys and
mountains of eastern Nevada have been home to
roaming bands of sheep and their herders for
more than 100 years. During the long cold
winters, these herders were often the few
customers who kept The Border Inn in business.
To show her appreciation, owner Denys Koyle
threw a "Sheepherder's Party" in January 2003.
Herders young and old came from many states to
trade stories and enjoy dinner and singing. Now
an annual event, the party has become an
important reunion and a tribute to the heritage
and traditions of life in Snake Valley.
“It’s a thank you
for the business is how it started. Now it’s
taken on a life of its own.” Koyle says.

Snake Valley Days
Each year the
residents of Snake Valley welcome neighbors,
former residents and new friends to the Snake
Valley Days Celebration. Held on the Saturday
of Labor Day, the Baker Volunteer Fire
Department sponsors a picnic and a dance.
Though it may seem that few people live in
this area, the gathering at the celebration
often numbers more than 200 guests. Visitors are welcome.
